I have found throughout my career, both as a manager of teams and as a member of teams, that fear based, hyper-competitive environments may create short term gains, but ALWAYS lose in the long run.
HBR points out 2 main reasons here - 1. Loyalty and 2. Engagement. In an environment where members of the team are supported, they tend to want to stay there. They engage. They don't call off for stress related illness or just to "have a personal day."
One of my favorite quotes in business is from Richard Branson — 'Clients do not come first. Employees come first. If you take care of your employees, they will take care of the clients.'
